A little preventative maintenance can go a long way in keeping your commercial bus out of the repair shop. We recommend keeping up with the following do-it-yourself maintenance tasks.

FOCUS ON THE TIRES

Tire health is important. It affects the performance of your bus in many ways, from impacting fuel efficiency to affecting the chances of an accident.

Start by regularly checking the tire air pressure. Improperly inflated tires are at greater risk of damage and of causing damage to the bus. Use a tire pressure monitor and compare the number to the manufacturer’s recommendations, adjusting as needed.

It’s also important to regularly inspect the bus tires. Make sure there are no leaks, cracks, or other damage. If you notice any issues, get them fixed before they become a bigger risk.

Finally, measure the bus tire tread every so often. Tread helps the bus tires maintain traction with the road. Tread gets worn down over time and eventually becomes inefficient, causing the wheels to lose traction on the road. At that point, you’ll want to replace your commercial truck tires.

BE MINDFUL OF YOUR SPEED

Exceeding the speed limit is not only illegal, it also negatively impacts your commercial bus.

Driving at higher speeds places unnecessary strain on the engine and other bus parts. It speeds up wear and tear, which will land your commercial bus in a repair shop sooner.

To avoid all of this, be sure to check your speed and keep it well within the speed limit. You’ll end up saving money on commercial bus repairs in the long run!

LEAVE PLENTY OF ROOM ON THE ROAD

It’s important to leave enough space between yourself and other motorists on the road. If someone slams on their brakes or cuts into your lane, you’ll have enough time to react and avoid a collision.

STAY WITHIN WEIGHT LIMITS

Commercial buses have limits on the amount of weight they can safely accommodate. Exceeding this limit places unnecessary strain on the vehicle, which speeds up wear. Be sure you know the weight restrictions of the given vehicle and stay within the limit.
