Transporting Wheelchair Occupants? The MV-1 is Designed For Your Needs

There are currently more than 3.3 million wheelchair users in the U.S. And the need for a vehicle, or vehicles, in your commercial or government fleet that can accommodate wheelchair passengers will only increase as the baby boomer generation ages and requires additional assistance to get around.

If you transport riders in wheelchairs on a regular basis, you know that the wheelchair lifts available for installation on shuttle vans and buses can be clunky and slow. Sure, they get the job done, but at the expense of your passengers’ comfort and your schedule. With the number of wheelchair users expected to rise, now is a good time to plan for more accommodation in your fleet.

The MV-1 Mobility Vehicle from AM General is designed from the start as a transport vehicle for people who use wheelchairs. Rather than allowing the accommodation of wheelchairs as an afterthought, these vans include:

  • Built-in side-entry power ramp. The ramps have a short deployment with a 1:4.4 slope that easily meets ADA guidelines or a longer deployment with a 1:6 slope that’s also ADA compliant. They are fast to use and give wheelchair riders more autonomy in entering the vehicle.
  • Plenty of head room. Wheelchair riders aren’t cramped or uncomfortable.
  • Ability to transport two wheelchair occupants at a time safely. One can be seated in the front passenger area (where there is no conventional seat) and one in the main passenger area behind the driver.

The MV-1 also meets all federal safety requirements that both new cars and aftermarket conversion vans must comply to.

Maker AM General, which manufactured the original Hummer, estimates that maintenance costs for the MV-1 will be less than $1,500 per 100,000 miles of use, making it a durable choice for passenger transport.

Available models of the MV-1 can run on gasoline or on compressed natural gas — an excellent choice for fleet vehicles that cover set, short routes.

The MV-1 vehicle is ideal for commercial use in any situation where you need to transport members of the public, some of whom may be in wheelchairs, such as commercial shuttles or government vehicles. Depending on how and where you plan to use it, the manufacturer may have incentives available to reduce the purchase price. Talk to us about your options.
